Wednesday 11th February once again saw Roberts Limited Prospect present a free information seminar with Dr John Kohnke.
The evening began with Trevor Mazzoni from Roberts Limited thanking the crowd of about 60 people for their attendance and introducing Dr John Kohnke. The gathering was predominantly Standardbred people, with Thoroughbreds and pleasure horses also represented.
Dr Kohnke talked for about 2 ½ hours on preparation for racing and blood counts. He gave valuable insights into the need to correctly condition horses and the stages the horse goes through in its preparation for racing. The information was backed up by information from many case studies and experiments that have been carried out throughout the world. Dr Kohnke's address also noted many small pointers that could be used to detect problems before they escalate.
His section on blood counts, pointed out the differences in machines used for equine blood and human blood, as well as the differences between Standardbred and Thoroughbred blood counts, and the importance of taking blood correctly and at the right time to achieve accurate readings.
The evening ended with about 10 Kohnke products being given away as door prizes. Dr Kohnke announced that he was donating a quantity of products to people affected by the Victorian bushfires and that he would be donating $5 from the sale of copies of his book 'Talking Horses Common Problems', which is available from Roberts Limited, to that cause.
Most trainers would be aware that Dr Kohnke has developed a range of horse feed supplements and other products and you can find out more about these on his website www.kohnkesown.com.
What may not be so commonly known is that Dr Kohnke also produces fact sheets and newsletters covering a whole range of horse nutrition, training and care subjects. These are freely available from produce stores and may also be downloaded from his website. The summer 2009 edition of the newsletter deals with topical issues such as 'strategies for the heat'.
