New Norfolk you beauty !
Congratulations to Rick Duggan and his committee at the New Norfolk Pacing Club for todays Australia Day race meeting, great racing, huge crowd and no wonder, the facilites are terrific , a band playing ,families on the lawns and the absolute best afternoon tea with homemade cakes ,what else could you ask for ?? (apart from a few winners) although Kevin Neilsan did his best to find one for everyone.
New Norfolk must be the most under utilized facility in Tasmanian harness racing, and what a pity .
Surely there could/should be a meeting held there on major Gallops race dates such as Cox Plate Day, Caulfield Cup or even Hobart Show Day , no one could convince me that a race meeting on any of those days would not be successful with a little bit of promotion .
Do we have so many race dates on the current calendar that we couldn't get fields for a couple of extra meetings??
O.K if there are'nt enough dollars in the pot and that seems to be the reason put forward I can't see any thing wrong with running a restricted meeting with perhaps the daily double legs being worth $ 4200.
Come on you trotting people , what do you think ? am I a lone voice in this or is there any one out there who agrees , or if you disagree tell us why
But at the end of the day the bottom line is. Well done New Norfolk

Well done to the NNPC for a grate days racing but, is this a track that we want to be racing on more than 3 times a year.
Look at the starts can you please tell me how many horses on the 2nd line was out of position.
Lets get this problem fixed first so people can bet with confidence.
You want to give New Norfolk extra race dates then why not Carrick as well?
It is also worth noting that the T.P.C gave away 3 race dates to improve turnover by having extra prize money at $8, 000 and a $10, 000. At Sunday meetings. Our Free For All class has never been so bad in Hobart in my view.
Fix the racing on the track first, then give additional race dates to Carrick & New Norfolk.
Also i enjoy the site keep up the good work.
I went to New Norfolk for the first time too and it was a fabulous day, but I am not sure you can blame the track for some untidy starts. The horses, drivers and officials are the same everywhere, so I guess we will just have to wait to see the stewards' report to see what explanation(s) was given in each case and what action taken.
And I totally agree about Carrick; fabulous track and beautifully maintained, it's a shame it's only really used for trials.
My first visit too and I'm really glad I printed the map off the BOTRA website, or I'd probably still be looking for the track. How about some signs guys?
At the end of the day when the officials are looking at giving an extra race date or two it is all based tote turnover and other money that gets back into the industry.
No one will bet if the horses are going to get an unfair start. Just imagine if 1/2 the numbers on the roulette wheel wasn't there at the casino.
I'm a big Carrick fan as well but New Norfolk has the advantage of stands and a great lawn area to sit or picnic on & enough horse satalls to around.
I don't think you can blame the false starts or poor starts in general on the track surely that is a starting problem that we are seeing more of in Tassie.
We also can't fix T.P.C's bad decisions regarding additional prizemoney for Free for alls at the expense of 3 race meetings.
It did not make sense to most industry participants I spoke to
Reasonable comment about signs to track, a few temporary race day signs would be good
geoff l
Carrick blame tote for having no stand why don't they build one there selves.
New Norfolk & Carrick must have extra race dates. I would also like to see more Friday/Saturday night racing at Elwick & Mowbray.
And about the signs every club should have some, mainly those off the highway.
I think all of the comments are valid about more meetings being allocated to New Norfolk and in particular Carrick but unfortunately I am not sure how this can be afforded unless these clubs are prepared to run restricted races with minimum stakes.
I am sure the major Clubs would be happy to run finals on sunday nights from heats run at tracks such as Carrick.
This would maybe also give opportunity for those horses who stuggle at Sunday meetings a chance to win fully funded races which is where we are having difficulties now.
Any other thoughts?
In my view heat & final racing clash to much.
As you are taking the mid-week class horse and Sunday class of horse.
Then you would end up having Sunday horses racing at the country tracks. To qualify for a final &/or they can't race on a Sunday cause of a final taking that class of race away from them.
It could work with non winners races such as the Allen Williams races.
I agree with your comments but was more referring to the races such as the Allen Williams races that cater for horses that can't get a run on Sunday.
If we run restricted heats maybe additional funds can be freed up to fund these races or maybe we need to seriously look at high stakes races that do not benefit Tasmania or our participants in any way. (ie Tas Pacing Championship, Aust Derby)
One of the very important considerations that needs to be made when looking at Sunday racing is that we are ultimately measured by betting turnover and bigger fields generate higher turnover which benefits verybody in Tasmania.
A good recent example of this was the Northern Light Harness Cup that was held at Mowbray after heats at Carrick. I am not sure that if this was just programmed as is it would have turned over as well as it did.
Food for thought anyway.....
